The storage of drinking water in winter

The problems with water supply of distant human settlements, food and confectionery shops, country villages and other facilities, where there is a need, are solved by creating reserves of quality drinking water in special tanks. But how to store drinking water in winter? It all depends on the location of the tank: indoors or outdoors. Polypropylene or polyethylene water storage tanks are often used to store drinking water indoors. Plastic tanks are made of environmentally friendly polyethylene or polypropylene sheets used in the food industry. The material is resistant to ultraviolet light, strength and safety.  Polypropylene tanks do not have the specific odor of other types of industrial plastic tanks. Plastic tanks for drinking water storage visually differ in the characteristic blue color. Plastic tanks, compared to cheaper reinforced concrete products, are not subject to corrosion, simpler and easier to install and transport due to low weight. They are also mobile and can be moved and installed in any convenient place. Minus of plastic tanks – they freeze water at sub-zero temperatures. So that the water does not freeze, plastic tanks in winter should be stored indoors at a positive air temperature. Above-ground or underground tanks of modular design will be an excellent solution for year-round storage of drinking water on an industrial scale on the street.

Modular tanks: pros and cons

With the advent of modular tanks, the issue of storing large reserves of water on the street in winter has been resolved once and for all for many users. Some tanks are mounted on the ground, others are partially or completely sunk into the ground. Underground structures are warmer than on the street, so the possibility of water freezing and turning to ice is reduced. Of course, the construction of underground tanks requires additional time and money for turnkey installation (digging a pit, crushed stone and gravel pad, pouring concrete mortar). But exactly underground tank that can be the only way to create water reserves for consumption in conditions of limited space or complex terrain, where it is necessary to install the structure. The presence of a polypropylene liner ensures high tightness of the tank and eliminates water pollution for long-term storage. Unlike reinforced concrete and plastic, prefabricated modular tanks for the possibility of year-round operation on the street are insulated with a layer of mineral wool 50-140 mm thick. In addition, the tank can be equipped with a heating system consisting of electric heaters with a capacity of 4-12 kW, temperature sensors and control unit. This protection of tanks from freezing is very effective and justified by the reliability, durability and quality of stored water.
