The history of the appearance of fire tanks

tanks for fire safety The development of the oil production industry in city of Baku in the 17th century required the availability of a huge number of oil storage tanks. At first, the issue was solved with the help of earthen tanks – an ordinary pit in dense clay soil. And only at the end of the 19th century, the engineer Shukhov designed the first steel vertical cylindrical tank. It was made of sheets of steel that were riveted together steel cylindrical tanks Today, the scope of use of iron tanks has significantly expanded. One of the areas is the storage of fire water supplies at facilities with a high level of fire safety:
  • logistics centers;
  • warehouses and garages;
  • the territory of plants and factories;
  • agricultural enterprises;
  • forest lands, fields;
  • transfer points, etc.

Types of fire tanks

According to the method of installation, fire tanks are underground and above-ground. Underground tanks are installed where space is limited. In order to install them, it is necessary to carry out earthworks, which will lead to an increase in the estimate and the terms of project implementation. Before installing an underground tank, it is necessary to check the presence of groundwater. If they lie at a shallow depth, it will not be possible to perform such a work, and you will have to consider the option of installing an above-ground tank. Above-ground fire tank do not require the involvement of special equipment and additional workers for earthworks. Therefore, this option of placing the tank is more economical and requires less time. Above-ground tank, depending on the location, are vertical and horizontal. The former take up less free space, but may be limited in a height. Depending on the assembly technology, steel tanks are welded and prefabricated(modular). Operation of welded tanks has negative sides:
  • Welding works require additional financial and time costs;
  • the cost of manufacturing a welded structure will be an order of magnitude higher than the price of a modular tank on bolted connections;
  • structures require periodic maintenance and painting to improve corrosion properties;
  • direct contact of water with the weld joint causes corrosion and gradual destruction and, as a result, leakage from under the weld joint.

Prefabricated modular tanks

Among all the solutions presented on the market, it is the modular containers that have all the necessary qualities of a strong, reliable, durable and inexpensive tank for storing fire-technical water. Advantages of modular tanks:
  1. Compared to welded constructions, there are no weld joints in modular tanks, which negatively affect the operational characteristics of the tank.
  2. Prefabricated tanks can be dismantled at any time and assembled in another place, For example, during a company relocation.
  3. Large tanks in disassembled form can be transported by one truck.
  4. The installation of the tank requires a minimum of general construction work – the tank is mounted on an ordinary strip foundation, filled in advance with concrete. There is also no need to involve special equipment.
  5. Modular tanks are fast-erecting structures that are installed within 2-3 days, depending on the capacity and configuration.
  6. Tanks can be installed in any weather.
  7. The lowest cost compared to welded and reinforced concrete containers.
  8. Prefabricated tanks can be additionally equipped with thermal insulation, water heating systems, if the tank is expected to be used in the winter.
Modular tanks are subject to requirements for the strength and resistance of the structure to wind loads, snow, and underground shocks. To ensure stability, modular tanks are securely attached to the foundation using special fasteners that protect the structure against overturning during strong gusts of wind. For better stability, it is recommended to deepen the prefabricated tanks by 2.4 meters. fire tank

Arrangement of modular tank

The modular tank consists of the following components:
  • Galvanized frame, which is attached to the base with the help of fasteners.
  • Galvanized corrugated sheets, which are installed around the frame and fastened with detachable bolt connections. The thickness, dimensions and number of steel sheets depend on the tank capacity and the diameter/height ratio of the structure. Corrugated sheet provides higher strength and rigidity of the structure than ordinary smooth sheet of metal.
  • The roof of the fire tank is usually made of plastic or steel. The shape of the roof is made in the form of a truncated pyramid so that snow does not linger on top and does not create a load on the structure of the tank
  • Polypropylene membrane – installed inside the tank to ensure the tightness of the water structure.

Criteria for choosing a modular capacity

A properly selected fire tank will allow you to create the necessary water supply for the automatic fire extinguishing system. When choosing a tank, it is necessary to take into account the following aspects:
  • The volume of the tank should cover the needs of all fire-fighting systems at the facility. Modular tanks are produced with a capacity of 15 to 5000 m3 of the water. It is also necessary to choose the optimal diameter and height of the tank in accordance with the characteristics of the territory.
  • Frequency of use of the tank – when using the fire tank all year round, it is necessary to provide for effective thermal insulation of the tank. It is also possible to additionally equip the tank with a water heating system by installing heating elements. This will prevent the liquid inside the tank against freezing in the winter.
  • The total number of tanks to be installed on a territory. If there is not enough space, an underground method of installing the modular tank can be envisaged.
  • Tank manufacturer – one of the best manufacturers of modular tanks is Aquapolymer Engineering company.
